Both Collin and Janelle first participated in 1999, the year in which the California State Science Fair first accepted sixth grade participants, and have both presented excellent projects here every year since then. In 1999 Collin was a sixth grader, and Janelle was a seventh grader, both eligible to participate for the first time that year.
